Biography

Dr Gimhan Godawatte is an Assistant Professor in Quantity Surveying at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, a master’s degree in Construction Project Management, a master’s degree in Quantity Surveying, and a PhD in Construction Management. His current research focuses on the applications of system dynamics and systems thinking for complex issues such as cost overruns, rework, technology adoption in project management

In a complex world making good decisions is difficult. Creating models, whether qualitative or quantitative, improves our understanding of complex situations enabling us to make better informed decisions. Systems Thinking (ST) and System Dynamics (SD) approaches can be used for qualitative and quantitative modelling. For example, SD can be used to map the cause and effect relationships that drive performance and then project their behaviour over time using computer simulation. The presentations at this event will describe instances where ST and SD based approaches have, and are, being used in the North.

A polycentric pan-Northern economy – modelling economic transformation through transport connections

Jack Snape (Transport for the North)

There is a growing consensus on the need to re-balance the economy away from London and the South East to other parts of the country, including the North of England. Key policy levers available to drive this re-balancing include skills, local industrial strategy and transport investment. Under the banner of the Northern Powerhouse, the Government and Northern leaders established Transport for the North, a new statutory body. TfN’s role is to make the case for transformational transport investment that would enable the North to function as a single economic area. By pooling the economies of the North’s major towns and cities, labour markets and trade networks would be expanded to a level that could begin to compete with London. Traditional incremental economic models and appraisal methods do not capture the non-marginal market failures that have developed over decades of poor connectivity between the North’s cities. TfN is developing dynamic systems-based modelling tools and a mission-oriented appraisal framework that begin to address these issues, as well as interactions with the wider policy landscape including skills and planning policy. These radical new tools and approaches have applications beyond transport investment business cases and could help strengthen analytical capability in a wide range of public bodies.

Applying System Dynamics to support strategic decision making within the Nuclear Sector

The Nuclear sector is a key economic driver for the North of England. Siôn will describes some examples where system dynamics has been applied to support strategic decision making in the nuclear sector, including workforce modelling and the management of radioactive waste. He will discuss how the stages of the system dynamics modelling approach were utilised to support robust policy analysis.

Public Sector Integration – Understanding and monitoring complex pathways

This presentation will cover the approach to research and evaluation of integrated health and social care service in Manchester. This will include the approach to evaluating new models of integrated care, mapping activity and financial flows, segmenting the population based on past and likely future need to high intensity services and forecasting future demand within the health and social care system.  The presentation will cover the approaches taken in Manchester and how the findings are developing understanding and being fed into commissioning and service delivery decisions.

SD meets SD: System Dynamics and Service Design in Public Services 7-8 Nov 2019

System Dynamics Networking Event, Belfast, 7-8 November 2019

As part of Belfast Design Week, the UK System Dynamics Chapter is getting together with colleagues who work in Service Design to discover what we have in common and learn from each other’s approaches.

The event will be in two parts. In late afternoon of 7 November there will be presentations covering System Dynamics, Service Design and Public Service Reform followed by discussion and networking, accompanied / followed by food and drink (not necessarily in that order). On the morning of 8 November, there will be a workshop session which will involve mixed groups of System Dynamics and Service Design practitioners, along with anyone else interested in public service, to discover in more depth ‘how would you begin to tackle this problem?’

2nd Annual Workshop on System Dynamics in Transportation Modelling

The System Dynamics Society Special Interest Group in Transportation (SDS T-SIG) are pleased to announce that the 2nd Annual Workshop on System Dynamics in Transportation Modelling will take place at the University of Leeds, Institute for Transport Studies, UK on April 11th – 12th 2019.

Following from last year’s successful event in Vienna, Austria, this free workshop will consist of a mix of presentations, practical sessions and network / sharing / collaboration building opportunities as well as the SDS T-SIG Annual Meeting. The intention of the workshop is to showcase the range of research and practise being carried out in transport studies and planning using system dynamics (SD) as a modelling method, and it is designed to:

·          Promote the role of SD in transportation;

·          Facilitate communication and collaboration in transportation and SD;

·          Share teaching materials, works in progress, best practise case studies and state-of-the-art use of SD in transportation research and planning.

Abstracts are now invited for oral and poster presentations which demonstrate both the potential and success of system dynamics in transport related research, to provoke discussion of conceptual issues through to fully tried-and-tested models. Topics can cover any aspect of transportation, such as freight and logistics, development of new technologies or business models (eg Mobility as a Service (MaaS)), performance management systems and sustainable and equitable policy analysis. Innovative approaches and cross-fertilisation with alternative forms of modelling (eg agent-based) or new and emerging forms of data are also encouraged. We particularly welcome proposals from MSc and PhD students which will be presented in a dedicated session.

An informal optional dinner will be hosted on the Thursday evening, and advice can be provided on booking suitable travel and accommodation (both at participants own expense). Leeds is easily accessible from either Leeds-Bradford Airport or Manchester Airport, and a well-connected mainline rail station. The full workshop programme and timings will be confirmed following the abstract submission process.

Event: System Dynamics in Climate Change Mitigation

The UK Chapter of the System Dynamics Society invites you to a network meeting on the theme of system dynamics in climate change mitigation Climate change mitigation and sustainability in general are systemic, multi-layered and wicked problems. Progress towards reducing global environmental impacts is far too slow and world greenhouse gas emissions rose unexpectedly last year. System dynamics has played a role in sustainability for decades, starting with the Limits to Growth study in the 1970s and more recently with the Climate Interactive project. While the characteristics of the mitigation problem in terms of physical stocks and flows are critical, this meeting will approach the subject from a more theoretical and higher level, exploring examples of real and perceived tensions that exist between human well-being and the health of natural systems. We will bring in concepts from critical systems thinking and social science to ask wider questions about causation.

The meeting will begin with four speakers: Prof Frank Boons will be talking on the relationship of circular economy and climate change, Dr John Broderick will be talking about his experiences in running the C-ROADS climate model, Dr Martin Reynolds from the OU will be talking about critical systems thinking and sustainability, and Dr Danial Schien will be presenting work on modelling of the carbon footprint of digital media.

There will be a plenary session in which examples of mitigation (both successful and otherwise) that are of interest to participants are identified. Groups will then explore their chosen example through causal loop diagramming and other SD related methods.

The meeting will be held on December 5th, from 1pm to 5pm, at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change, Pariser Building, Room H18.

This is the 60th anniversary of the founding of System Dynamics by Jay Forrester, who died in November 2016, leaving behind a unique and precious legacy. Our tribute, this conference, covers contemporary examples of the classic themes he first developed:

  • Industrial Dynamics

We also cover Health Policy, which has become one of the most significant domains modelled using SD. The conference is open to all, whether or not you work in System Dynamics.
